D&T – MS Dynamic Unfolding – Solution for estimating complex deposits with folding

Grade estimation in complex geological deposits presents challenges to specialists in geological modeling. Traditional interpolation methods are based on distance and direction. In bent deposits, grades should be related to the distance relative to the time of deposition, before deformation.

It is known that grade estimation is the foundation for calculating reserves and mine planning. If geology is not well understood and your construction methods are not adopted correctly, serious financial losses will occur. For estimating these types of deposits, Hexagon Mining | MineSight developed the tools Relative Surface Interpolator (RSI) and MineSight Dynamic Unfolding (MSDU).

A case study was carried out in a complex geological deposit of Tenke-Fungurume, in Africa, which requires an interpolation method that best fits the genesis of mineralization. In this study, a comparison was made between the MineSight tools (RSI and MSDU) and the method Local Anysotropic Kriging (LAK).

In this work, it was observed that the use of MSDU over LAK, in an exploration model, may not be a determining factor in the viability of the project. However, the grade differences found between the two methods can produce enough local variation to change pit designs and the entire mine planning.

Be sure to read the article! It is a very interesting study since in most deposits the geology is very complex, requiring a model that best represents it.
